Mobile AED Units are the Latest New Measure to Improve Outcomes When Responding to On-Campus Medical Emergencies

Public Safety supervisors driving four Public Safety patrol vehicles – two at Morningside and one each at Manhattanville and the Irving Medical Center – are now equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to help save lives on campus in the event of cardiac health emergencies. The deployment of the AED units – along with the expanded training to operate the units – are among the new initiatives Public Safety has undertaken to further enhance the department’s role as a first responder to some medical emergencies.

Columbia University Public Safety, NYPD and DEA provide free, anonymous disposal of unused prescription medications

Columbia University Public Safety, the New York City Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are partnering for the DEA’s annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 28, a free service to all those who attend or work at Columbia, as well as members of the University’s neighboring communities.

Showing a strong spirit of service, Public Safety has provided a significant donation of unclaimed clothing to Columbia Community Service (CCS)’s clothing drive. The clothing drive, part of CCS’s annual appeal, provides gently used garments to neighborhood service organizations.

Meet the newest member of Public Safety’s green fleet, our second Chevy Bolt!

Our commitment to environmental responsibility is a key part of our ongoing mission to ensure the safety of the Columbia Community. In 2008, we started moving toward a sustainable fleet with our first hybrid vehicle. As of 2017, when we converted the last gas-powered evening shuttle to a hybrid, the entire Public Safety fleet of 23 vehicles and two shuttle buses is green.

Columbia University has been named one of the Safest Colleges in America 2017 by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, a national trade association that works to further industry education and public knowledge about safety and security.

Safety on campus was again rated highest in satisfaction of the categories across the 20 schools and affiliates surveyed in the March 2015 Student Quality of Life survey, a biennial University-wide survey that aims to characterize student satisfaction and provide data that will ultimately enhance the student experience at Columbia.
