After being informed by an affiliate that their bike was stolen while parked in front of Prentis Hall, PSO Hernandez responded to the crime alert and was able to locate and apprehend the perpetrator.

After observing a male opening car doors and stealing property from vehicles and delivery trucks parked along Broadway and West 129th street, PSO Santana immediately notified Public Safety Operations and stopped the individual, preventing the male from stealing the property.

60 members of Public Safety were recognized for their perfect attendance or earning a promotion over the past year, receiving certificates from their supervisors in place of the annual Public Safety Promotion, Awards, and Recognition Ceremony which was postponed this year due to the pandemic. 

Public Safety Officer Michael Layne has not missed a day of work since he started in August 2000.

After being notified by the Columbia Crisis Hotline of a student in distress, Sgt. Marrero used empathetic listening and de-escalation strategies learned from Public Safety training to help the student through a trying time.

The University's text alert system has been expanded to allow anyone, including non-affiliates and community members, to sign up for emergency communications in cases where ongoing events pose an immediate threat or have a significant impact. 

Public Safety recently published its Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for 2020.

The University released its Report of the Inclusive Public Safety Working Group in response to President Bollinger’s July 2020 call to action on Columbia’s anti-racism commitment. The Report of the Inclusive Public Safety Working Group includes observations and initial recommendations from this working group of students, faculty and staff from across the University.
