The detainment of one of our students by the Department of Homeland Security last week was deeply troubling and unsettling for our University community. Understandably, many members of our community are still experiencing a good deal of fear and uncertainty and asking what more we and the University can do to support the safety of our community. We write to update you on important steps the University has undertaken over the last week to enhance safety and clarify protocols and procedures regarding interactions with law enforcement.

With gratitude to our Facilities teams for their expeditious work to ensure campus grounds are accessible and with improving weather conditions expected throughout the greater New York City area, we will return to in-person instruction tomorrow, February 24.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for New York City and its surrounding areas beginning Sunday morning, February 22 through the afternoon of Monday, February 23. Normal University operations are expected.

The Office of Public Safety extends a warm welcome back to campus. At the start of every semester our office provides our community a reminder and update on our campus safety approach and important information on resources and best practices to keep you safe in and around campus. Please take the time to review this information.

Given the improving transportation conditions throughout the greater New York City area and the snow removal on campus grounds thanks to our Facilities teams, we will return to in-person learning tomorrow, January 27, with normal operations on campus. 

This message notes changes to select campus services on Sunday and Monday. Before visiting campus locations or attending a scheduled event, we encourage you to check the appropriate websites or with event organizers for any additional status updates.

With the winter weather expected to continue into tomorrow, Columbia University is pivoting to remote instruction on Monday, January 26, for all classes on our Morningside and Manhattanville campuses. Students will hear directly from their schools and instructors with additional details.

As the investigation continues into the tragic events at Brown University, our thoughts are with the Brown community and all those affected by this terrible event. We also want to keep our community fully informed about our public safety posture.

Beginning December 8, CUID swipe access to all academic buildings on Columbia’s Morningside campus has been removed during regular building hours. 

Columbia University Facilities and Operations coordinated donations of hundreds of school supply items including backpacks, binders, glue sticks, pens, pencils, paper, and more.
