Important updates regarding expanded access at our Morningside campus, effective Tuesday, September 2

In light of the shooting incident in Midtown Manhattan yesterday evening, we want to remind you of the safety resources available to the Columbia community.

More than 300 staff members from Public Safety and other departments across Facilities and Operations attended professional development trainings in June led by The Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center.

As we prepare to celebrate our graduates, please review these important details about campus operations and access during this special time.

Guest and alumni access campus restrictions will continue tomorrow (Friday, May 9).

There are changes to guest and alumni access to campus on Thursday, May 8.

Automated same-day guest registration and same-day alumni access will be suspended on the Morningside campus Thursday, April 24 and Friday, April 25.

We have been made aware of possible plans to establish encampments on Columbia's campuses. We want to clearly communicate that camping and encampments on Columbia's campuses are prohibited by University Policy. Our University Rules and Policies prioritize academic activities and communal use of campus space. A more detailed explanation of how an encampment as a form of protest runs the risk of serious violations under the Rules of University Conduct can be found here.

On Friday, March 21, 2025, Columbia shared its approach to managing protests and demonstrations more effectively while preserving our value of free expression. These updates included the addition of Special Patrol Officers and details on Columbia’s rules related to masking on campus and identification requirements. We understand many in our community have additional questions, and we want to share more details on our efforts.

Beginning March 10, available gates for CUID holders and registered alumni and guests to enter the Morningside campus will be limited to the north College Walk pedestrian gates at Broadway & 116th and Amsterdam & 116th, and the Wien Gate on 116th between Amsterdam and Morningside Drive.

Beginning February 10, Columbia students, faculty, and staff can register up to two guests on the same day as their visit using the guest registration portal, and alumni visiting campus may register for same-day access to Morningside campus.

With the spring semester in full swing, I want to remind you of resources and good safety practices to support you in navigating Columbia and New York City. Being aware of our surroundings and looking out for one another are two easy ways we can help create a safe environment for all.
