Sergeant Puts De-Escalation and Crisis Intervention Training to Action in Assisting Student in Need

March 09, 2021

On Sunday, February 21, 2021, Sergeant Gregory Marrero (assigned to the Morningside campus Operations desk) was notified by the Columbia Crisis Hotline of a Columbia University student in distress. After acquiring pertinent information from the counselor, Marrero immediately dispatched assistance to the student's location. While waiting for assistance to arrive, Marrero was put on a three-way call with the counselor and the student, where he maintained a 13-minute conversation with the student until assistance arrived. During this conversation, Marrero consoled the student, creating a personal connection, asked appropriate questions and expressed sincere sympathy towards the student's feelings. Due to Marrero's quick thinking and outstanding interpersonal skills, the proper resources were able to arrive and further assist the student in his time of need. Great job, Sergeant Gregory Marrero!
