Public Safety Officer Confronts Thief, Protects Community

April 19, 2021

On 3/9/21, while assigned to post 513 outside of the JLGSC, PSO Jose Santana observed a male opening car doors and stealing property from vehicles and delivery trucks parked along Broadway and West 129th Street. PSO Santana immediately notified Public Safety Operations and stopped the male, preventing him from taking the property. PSO Santana placed himself in-between the suspect and members of the community, ensuring that the delivery drivers and Columbia staff were safe in the event that the individual became violent. Santana's quick response and constant communication ensured a swift and efficient response from DPS units who apprehended the perpetrator and turned him over to the NYPD. PSO Santana displayed an immense amount of selfless service, placing the safety and security of the Columbia community above all else.
