Message from the COO: Change in Morningside Campus Access Status

August 09, 2024

Dear members of the Columbia community,

Effective Monday, August 12th, we are adjusting our campus access status to Orange for all hours of the day. This change is intended to keep our community safe given reports of potential disruptions at Columbia and on college campuses across the country as we approach the beginning of the new school year.  We are particularly concerned about non-affiliates who may not have the best interests of the Columbia community in mind.

We recognize that this change may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate your understanding. The campus access status level is a dynamic measure that responds to potential disruptions to our academic activities and campus operations. We adjust the status level based on current circumstances, information from the media, law enforcement and other sources, and potential events that could impact Columbia. Our decisions are guided by two primary objectives: maintaining a safe and secure environment for all community members and preserving our academic mission.

Key Points:

  1. Access: Morningside campus access will now be restricted to Columbia affiliates with a valid CUID and their registered guests at all times.

  1. Entry Points: The following Morningside campus entry points are available 24/7 (except where noted) but will now require CUID or pre-registration for entry at all hours. All other entry points will be closed.

  • College Walk at 116th Street and Broadway
  • College Walk at 116th Street and Amsterdam Avenue
  • Wien Gate on 116th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive
  • John Jay Gate on 114th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue
  • Northwest Corner Building at 120th Street and Broadway (CUID swipe access between5:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m., 7 days a week)
  1. Guest Registration: Columbia affiliates must continue to use the guest registration form to provide access for guests and event attendees.

  1. Duration: This status will remain in effect until further notice. We will continuously assess the situation and adjust as necessary.
