August 20, 2020

Public Safety’s Lion Safe app allows the user to request emergency services at the touch of a button along with other useful quick links including maps, shuttle schedules, crime alerts, emergency protocols, campus safety notifications, and non-emergency numbers for each campus.

The Public Safety app is available for iOS and Android devices. It can be downloaded for free from the App Store or through Google Play by searching “Lion Safe Columbia University”.

“The Lion Safe app brings the resources of the Public Safety Department to the pocket of every Columbia affiliate with a smartphone. Everyone at Columbia should download and familiarize themselves with the app for everyday use or in case of emergency,” said Vice President for Public Safety James McShane. “The new app is one more way that Public Safety is continually enhancing our services for the benefit of the Columbia community.”

The app also introduces a new safety feature called Friend Walk, a way to alert someone else of your location in real-time so they can follow your path to your destination and trigger a call to emergency services if necessary. Similar to sending a sending an SMS message, your friend will receive a link to connect, which takes them to your location on a map. Once you arrive at your destination safely, be sure to finish your trip and disconnect.

The new app joins the many other safety resources and enhancements available to the Columbia community for travel around campus including the On-Demand Evening ShuttleIntercampus Shuttle, the neighborhood merchants serving as Safe Havens, and the Blue Light Emergency Call Boxes
