Columbia Ranked Top 5 Safest College Campus in New York

Columbia University ranked as the fifth safest campus in New York State according to an analysis conducted by Yourlocalsecurity.com, a website operated by ADT Security Services and partner of SafeStreets.

The website highlighted Columbia’s guard service for school or sponsored events among the factors contributing to its fifth-placed ranking. Other schools included in the top 5 were New York City-based Fashion Institute of Technology, Pace University-New York, CUNY’s Hunter College and Yeshiva University.

The Department of Public Safety is continually improving safety resources available to the Columbia community. Among recent safety resources and enhancements include the On-Demand Evening Shuttle, an app-based rideshare system that provides a safe, convenient and free transportation service for Columbia affiliates after hours, and the Lion Safe app, a smart-phone app that provides quick and easy access to all of Public Safety’s resources.

"The ranking speaks to the efforts of our Public Safety staff and officers and to the Columbia community as a whole for a collective commitment to maintaining a safe and open environment on campus.” 

Previously, Columbia University was also was ranked #22 out of the more than 2,000 four-year colleges as the Safest Colleges in America by the National Council for Home Safety and Security

To conduct its rankings, Yourlocalsecurity.com compiled data from public crime reports including the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report as well as campus safety and security data for public or private institutions with a minimum of 5,000 enrolled students offering two- or four-year degrees.
