Morningside Campus Access for Saturday, May 4, 2024

For Saturday, May 4, 2024, access to the Morningside campus will remain limited to Morningside faculty, students residing in residential buildings on campus and employees who provide essential services to campus buildings, libraries, labs and residential student life. New beginning May 4, Columbia Transportation will operate a temporary Morningside Campus Loop service to assist campus community members with access to the 116th Street and Amsterdam gate while other campus entry points are restricted.

Beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, access to the Morningside campus will be limited to CUID holders only. All campus gates will remain open, but CUID will be required for entry.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday April 15, access to the Morningside campus will be limited to CUID holders only with entry at the College Walk pedestrian gates at Amsterdam and 116th, Wien Gate on 116th between Amsterdam and Morningside Drive, and Earl Hall Gate at 117th and Broadway (during its regular hours, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.). All other campus gates will be closed, including Broadway and 116th until further notice. CUID-only campus access may be in place through Friday, April 19.

The University was made aware of multiple, potentially significant protest and counterprotest activities occurring the evening of Thursday, April 25, outside the campus gates. Out of an abundance of caution, please avoid the area this evening if that is possible for you to do and read more for additional safety and security measures the University has in place.

In light of the protest activity on campus, members of the University community who can avoid coming to the Morningside campus on Tuesday, April 30 should do so; essential personnel should report to work according to university policy. Be aware that access to campus and other campus buildings may be restricted.

For Thursday, May 2, 2024, access to the Morningside campus continues to be limited to students residing in residential buildings on campus and employees who provide essential services to campus buildings, libraries, labs and residential student life. There is no additional access to the Morningside campus.

The University is storing items left at the encampments on South Lawn and Mathematics Lawn of the Morningside campus and will make them available for retrieval.

For Friday, May 3, 2024, access to the Morningside campus will expand to include all Morningside faculty in addition to the existing access for students residing in residential buildings on campus and employees who provide essential services to campus buildings, libraries, labs and residential student life.

We know that the restrictions on Columbia’s Morningside campus have been very difficult for many of you and we are working on a plan to reopen campus as quickly as possible. Please know that the safety and security of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority. Our decision to restrict the campus temporarily is one we take fully aware that the loss of shared spaces, libraries, dining halls and offices has been a real hardship. Tomorrow’s expansion of faculty access puts teaching, mentorship and research on a better footing for the end of the term.
