Often, people purchase high-end products or electronics with their tax returns then recycle the box it came in by putting it in front of their house or apartment door. Not a good move.
Burglars often canvass an area before they strike, so leaving boxes with pictures of high-end items in front of your door is NOT recommended.
Reduce your chances of burglary by keeping these tips in mind before recycling your box:
- Check with the store where you purchased the item in the event you need to return it. Some companie may require the item to be returned in its original box.
- If you are going to discard your box for recycling, cut the box in a way that you can turn it inside out with the picture facing in. Tie it up before putting it outside.
- Public Safety offers discounted STOP-THEFT Tags (www.Stoptheft.com), an effective deterrence for hi-tech equipment. Stop Security Plates significantly reduces the percentage of theft by clearly marking your equipment as an obvious liability for any potential thief.
