Recent Incidents at 116th Street Subway Station

October 25, 2024

Dear Members of the Columbia Community,

I am writing to make you aware of two recent incidents of forcible touching/fondling that were reported at the 116th Street subway station platform. We take these incidents seriously and are working closely with law enforcement to help ensure the safety of our community members.

Enhanced Security Measures

The New York City Police Department Transit Bureau has increased its presence on the subway platforms at this location and is actively investigating these cases. At street level, Columbia Public Safety has staff at 116th Street and Broadway 24/7 and additional patrols in the area during the evening and late night.

Safety Tips

  • Remain alert and aware of your surroundings at all times
  • The 116th Street subway station has an MTA station agent in the booth 24/7. Passengers can wait near the station agent and move to the platform closer to when the train is arriving. Report any incident to the station agent who can contact 911.
  • Keep track of when your train is arriving by following the digital passenger information displays or by downloading the MTA app to minimize the time spent waiting on the subway platform, especially when traveling alone or during off-hours
  • Avoid wearing headphones or looking at your phone while waiting for trains
  • Stand back from the platform edge and near other passengers when possible
  • Travel with companions when feasible
  • Move to a different car or area if you feel uncomfortable
  • During the evening and late-night hours, the Evening Shuttle is available as an alternate means of transportation when traveling around the Morningside and Manhattanville campuses
  • See additional safety tips when traveling on public transportation

Remember to use the various safety resources mentioned in my ;previous message to you, including ways to get around safely.

If you observe suspicious behavior or feel unsafe, do not hesitate to call 911 or Public Safety at (212) 854-5555. Your safety is our top priority.

Sincerely,

Gerald Lewis Jr. (he/him/his)
