Update on Morningside Park incidents

October 06, 2023

Dear Columbia University Community,

I am writing to inform you that the person sought in connection with the recent public lewdness incidents in and around Morningside Park has been identified and apprehended. I want to thank NYPD for their partnership and support in bringing closure to this case. I also want to thank the members of the Columbia University Department of Public Safety-Morningside Campus Operations and Investigations Unit, for their diligent and committed work in this matter.

I remind our university community that although an arrest has been made, we should continue to practice sound safety habits. Remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings when traveling during both day and nighttime hours. If possible, travel with a friend or in groups. Remember to use the On-Demand Evening Shuttle and other Columbia shuttles, request a safety escort, download the recently relaunched Lion Safe app, and take advantage of the various safety resources mentioned in my previous message to you. If you observe suspicious behavior, immediately contact 911 or Columbia University Public Safety at (212) 854-5555.

Sincerely,
Gerald Lewis Jr. (he, him, his)
Vice President for Public Safety
Columbia University in the City of New York
