Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in rechargeable electronics, from smart phones, laptops and tablets, to scooters, bikes and electric cars - and chances are you are using them to power your devices. You may have heard about recent fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, which were not limited to e-bike batteries only. These fires are preventable by following these guidelines.

Through gradually transitioning its vehicles to hybrid and electric as they need to be replaced, Public Safety has greatly reduced its emissions. As the 2022 reporting year came to a close, it was revealed that the department has achieved a 33% drop in fuel consumption since 2019, which is the baseline year for Columbia’s sustainability plan, Plan 2030.

I am writing to share important safety information. The local police precinct has communicated to us that they are monitoring the area and deploying special patrols to deter criminal activity in and around Morningside Park due to a recent increase in criminal activity. While NYPD and Park Police maintain a focused presence in and around Morningside Park – and Columbia Public Safety supplements that presence with mobile patrol units – I ask that you use caution and care when deciding to travel in and around Morningside Park – particularly during the night hours – and always remain aware of your surroundings.

Eleven Public Safety employees who celebrated their 25-year milestone anniversary in 2021, 2022, and 2023 were celebrated at an event on March 6 honoring faculty and staff across the University who marked their 25th year, and at a separate event on March 8 for the Facilities and Operations honorees. 

43 Public Safety team members were recognized for perfect attendance or earning a promotion over the past year at the Public Safety 19th annual Promotion, Awards, and Recognition ceremony held on February 17.

Public Safety, the Inclusive Public Safety Advisory Committee, and University Life condemn the actions of the officers involved in the killing of Tyre Nichols and share condolences with the family of Tyre Nichols, the broader Memphis community, and all who are directly impacted during a moment of profound grief and outrage.
